You need the liability in your exchange account. Check the lay odds right before placing both bets — prices move, and an unmatched lay leaves you exposed.
What is a lay bet?
Laying means betting against an outcome on a betting exchange, so you take the bookmaker’s side. If the selection loses you win the lay stake minus commission; if it wins you pay the liability. Backing at a bookmaker and laying the same selection at an exchange is known as matched betting.
Qualifying bet vs free bet
A qualifying bet uses your own money, so the aim is a small, known loss to unlock an offer. A free bet with the stake not returned (SNR) only pays the winnings, so you lay less and keep part of its value — often 70–80% at higher odds. A stake returned (SR) free bet also pays back the stake.
Commission, liability and risks
The exchange charges commission (often 2–5%) on net winnings, and the lay stake formula allows for it. Liability is what you lose on the exchange if the selection wins, so it must be in your account. Odds can move or a lay can go unmatched before both bets are placed, and bookmakers may limit accounts that only take offers.
