An Asian handicap bet gives one team a head start in goals before kick-off, then settles on the adjusted score. The favourite gets a minus handicap, the underdog a plus handicap, and the draw is removed as a separate outcome. Depending on the line, your bet can win, lose, be refunded, or be settled as a half win or half loss.
What is an Asian handicap bet?
The idea is to turn a mismatch into something closer to a 50/50 contest. Instead of backing a strong favourite at very short odds, you back them to overcome a goal deficit. Instead of backing an underdog to win outright, you back them with a goal or more in hand.
To settle a bet, apply the handicap to your team's score at full time and compare. If your team is ahead after the adjustment, you win. If it is level, your stake is returned. If it is behind, you lose.
Asian handicaps settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time; extra time and penalty shootouts are ignored. Because the market has only two sides, the bookmaker's margin is often smaller than on the three-way match result.
Level handicap (0) and half-goal lines (±0.5)
A handicap of 0, also shown as PK or level, means no head start. Your team must win, and a draw returns your stake. It is identical to draw no bet.
Half-goal lines can never finish level after the adjustment, so there are no refunds. -0.5 means your team must win, the same as backing it in the match result market. +0.5 means your team must win or draw, the same as a double chance bet.
| Your team's result | AH 0 | AH -0.5 | AH +0.5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wins | Win | Win | Win |
| Draws | Refund | Lose | Win |
| Loses | Lose | Lose | Lose |
Whole-goal lines (±1, ±2)
On whole-goal lines, the adjusted score can finish level, which gives a refund. At -1, your bet wins if your team wins by 2 or more, and your stake comes back if it wins by exactly 1. At +1, your bet wins if your team wins or draws, and your stake comes back if it loses by exactly 1.
-2 and +2 follow the same logic with one more goal, so a two-goal win at -2 is refunded. Lines such as ±1.5 and ±2.5 work like ±0.5 with extra goals: no refunds, just win or lose.
| Your team's result | AH -1 | AH +1 |
|---|---|---|
| Wins by 2+ | Win | Win |
| Wins by 1 | Refund | Win |
| Draws | Lose | Win |
| Loses by 1 | Lose | Refund |
| Loses by 2+ | Lose | Lose |
Quarter lines explained (±0.25 and ±0.75)
Quarter lines split your stake into two equal bets on the two nearest lines. -0.25 is half on 0 and half on -0.5. -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1. The same applies to plus lines and to bigger numbers such as -1.25 or +1.75. You will often see them written as a pair, for example 0, -0.5 or -0.5/-1.
This means one result is usually settled as a half win or a half loss. A half win means half your stake wins at the quoted odds and the other half is refunded. A half loss means half your stake is lost and the other half is refunded.
| Your team's result | AH -0.25 | AH +0.25 | AH -0.75 | AH +0.75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wins by 2+ | Win | Win | Win | Win |
| Wins by 1 | Win | Win | Half win | Win |
| Draws | Half loss | Half win | Lose | Win |
| Loses by 1 | Lose | Lose | Lose | Half loss |
| Loses by 2+ | Lose | Lose | Lose | Lose |
More Asian handicap examples
Half loss: you stake £20 on a team at -0.25 with odds of 1.90, and the match ends 1-1. £10 on the 0 line is refunded and £10 on the -0.5 line loses. You get £10 back, a £10 loss.
Half win: you stake £20 on an underdog at +0.25 with odds of 1.95, and the match ends 1-1. £10 on the 0 line is refunded and £10 on the +0.5 line wins, returning £19.50. Your total return is £29.50, a £9.50 profit.
Refund: you stake £20 on a favourite at -1 with odds of 1.85, and they win 2-1. After the handicap the score is level, so your full £20 is returned. Had they won 3-1, you would have received £37.
When to use Asian handicaps
Asian handicaps suit matches with a clear favourite, where the match result price is too short to interest you, and matches where you want some protection against a draw without backing the draw itself.
- Pick the line that matches your view. If you expect a favourite to win but not comfortably, -0.25 or -0.5 fits that view better than -1.5.
- Compare neighbouring lines. A quarter line's price should sit between the prices of the two lines either side of it.
- Check the in-play rules. Some bookmakers settle in-play Asian handicaps only on goals scored after your bet is placed.
- Remember a refund is not a win. Pushes and half losses still affect your bankroll over time.

FAQ
What does Asian handicap -1 mean?
Your team must win by 2 or more goals for the bet to win. A one-goal win returns your stake, and a draw or defeat loses.
What does Asian handicap +0.5 mean?
Your bet wins if your team wins or draws. It is the same as a double chance bet on that team.
What is a half win in Asian handicap betting?
On a quarter line, half your stake wins at the quoted odds and the other half is returned. It happens, for example, at -0.75 when your team wins by exactly one goal.
Does an Asian handicap include extra time?
No. Standard Asian handicap bets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties are not included.
Is Asian handicap 0 the same as draw no bet?
Yes. Both refund your stake if the match is drawn, pay out if your team wins and lose if it loses.
