In betting, -1.5 means the team you back must win by 2 or more. +1.5 means the team you back wins your bet if it wins, draws or loses by exactly 1. The half point means there is never a push: every bet either wins or loses. You will see ±1.5 on football Asian handicaps, the baseball run line and the hockey puck line.
What does minus 1.5 mean in betting?
A minus sign in front of a spread or handicap means the team is the favourite and is giving away a head start. At -1.5, take 1.5 away from your team's final score. If it is still ahead, you win.
In practice that means a win by 2 or more. A 2-0 or 3-1 win covers -1.5. A 1-0 win does not, because 1 - 1.5 = -0.5 leaves your team behind once the handicap is applied.
A plus sign means the team is the underdog and receives a head start. At +1.5, add 1.5 to your team's score. Your bet wins unless the team loses by 2 or more.
What do plus and minus mean in betting?
Plus and minus appear in two different places, which is where most of the confusion comes from.
On the line, minus means favourite (giving goals, runs or points) and plus means underdog (receiving them). On the price, in American odds, minus shows how much you stake to win 100, and plus shows how much a 100 stake wins.
-1.5 in football: the Asian handicap
In football (soccer), -1.5 is an Asian handicap line. It works exactly like the run line and puck line: the favourite must win by at least two goals, and the underdog at +1.5 covers with a win, a draw or a one-goal defeat.
Football handicaps settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties do not count.
| Result | Team A -1.5 | Team B +1.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Team A wins by 2+ goals (2-0, 3-1) | Wins | Loses |
| Team A wins by 1 goal (1-0, 2-1) | Loses | Wins |
| Draw (0-0, 1-1) | Loses | Wins |
| Team B wins (0-1, 1-3) | Loses | Wins |
The run line in baseball (MLB)
In Major League Baseball, ±1.5 is the standard run line, baseball's version of the point spread. Many games are decided by a single run, so laying -1.5 with a favourite usually turns a short minus price on the moneyline into plus money on the run line. The underdog at +1.5 moves the other way, often to a minus price.
One quirk: if the home team leads after the top of the ninth inning, it does not bat again. That can cap its winning margin, which matters when you back a home favourite at -1.5.
Check the rules on shortened games too. Run line bets usually need nine innings, or eight and a half if the home team is ahead, to stand.
The puck line in hockey (NHL)
The NHL equivalent is the puck line, also set at ±1.5. The favourite must win by two or more goals; the underdog covers with any win or a one-goal defeat.
Empty-net goals matter. A team trailing by one late in the game often pulls its goalie for an extra skater, which can turn a 3-2 into a 4-2 and decide the puck line.
Overtime and shootouts work against -1.5. Regular-season overtime ends at the first goal, and the shootout winner is credited with a single goal, so any game that goes beyond regulation finishes as a one-goal win. Most bookmakers include overtime and shootouts when settling the puck line, but check the rules.
Is -1.5 the same as over 1.5?
No. -1.5 is a handicap on one team's winning margin. Over 1.5 is a total: it wins if the match has two or more goals, no matter who scores them. A 1-1 draw wins an over 1.5 bet but loses a -1.5 bet on either team.
A handicap does not change how likely a result is, only how it is priced. -1.5 pays more because more has to go right. +1.5 pays less because it gives you more ways to win. Neither is better in itself. What matters is whether the price is bigger than the real probability justifies, and even then results are never guaranteed.

FAQ
What does +1.5 mean in betting?
Your team gets a head start of 1.5 goals, runs or points. You win if the team wins, draws or loses by exactly 1, and lose if it loses by 2 or more.
What happens on a -1.5 bet if the team wins by exactly 1?
The -1.5 bet loses. The 1.5 handicap turns a one-goal win into a half-goal defeat, so the team needs to win by at least 2.
Can a -1.5 bet push?
No. Because of the half point, the adjusted score can never be level, so the bet always wins or loses.
What is a run line in baseball?
The run line is baseball's point spread. It is almost always set at -1.5 for the favourite and +1.5 for the underdog.
What does -1.5 mean in football?
It is an Asian handicap: your team must win by two or more goals in 90 minutes plus stoppage time for the bet to win.
